This business is all about beginnings—the first notes of a song, the lyric that tells your story, the build-up to the moment you walk into a room as a married couple. The start of something special.

But on May 4th, while my voice was announcing the arrival of Mike and Síle Marie, I was in a very different place: waiting for the arrival of my daughter, Nell.

The Build-Up

Mike and Síle Marie were brilliant to work with. Along with their wedding intro, Mike had also booked me as their DJ. But with my wife due any day, I made sure to have my DJ duties covered well in advance.

Thankfully, there was one thing I could still deliver—no, not Nell—their wedding intro! And that’s exactly what I did.

The Last-Minute Detail

In the lead-up to their big day, Mike sent through a last-minute script change. He wanted to be announced by his full name—“Michael, not Mike”—to avoid a bit of slagging from his dad.

It was such a small tweak, but it reminded me why I love this work so much. It’s all about the little details, the personal touches that make each intro feel truly theirs.

The Big Day (And My Even Bigger Day)

With that final edit made, the finished version was sent off. From there, all the venue needed to do was press play.

A few days later, in the middle of the sleepless newborn haze, I got a message from Mike. Just a quick thank you to say the intro “got the crowd going from the start.”

It’s always great hearing that, but this time, the message meant something deeper. It reinforced everything I believe about what I do.

Why It Matters
